Award Ceremony of UNESCO Jikji Memory of the World Prize
In April 2004, under the support of Korean Government, UNESCO’s Executive Board approved the establishment of the UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize as a means of promoting the Memory of the World Programme and commemorating the inscription of the Jikji, or the "Buljo jikji simche yojeol”, the oldest existing book made through movable metal print.
The Prize has been awarded to the individuals or groups who have made a significant contribution to the preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage every other year with the decision by the Executive Board in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France at its 169th session, April 2004. The candidates shall have been recommended by International NGOs which have official relations with UNESCO member countries(consulted with UNESCO National Committees), Inter-governmental organizations(IGOs) and UNESCO.
The prizewinner shall be designated by the Director-General of UNESCO on the recommendation of the Jury of the UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize and the Jury shall consist of the 14 members of the International Advisory Committee of the Memory of the World Programme, appointed by the Director-General. The Prize money of 30 thousand dollars shall be awarded to the prize-winners. (The City of Cheongju shall be burdened with the expense and prize money.)
